Mental Health Matters: A Few Of My Mental Health “Training” Strategies

I think it’s safe to say that the past 20+ months has exposed the fact that many people totally neglect their mental health. ⁣Mental health is everything! Many people focus on their physical health, but totally overlook their mental health. Both need to be trained, and consistently.

⁣I’m incredibly grateful for the therapy I consistently went to in 2018 and 2019 as this has given me many tools to help me manage (and even improve) my mental health during this pandemic, and for the rest of my life.⁣

A few of my daily go-to’s for training my mental health include: ⁣

⁣1) Breathing exercises (this is my form of meditation)

⁣2) Practicing gratitude ⁣

⁣3) Hobbies (learning Swedish and refreshing my French)⁣

⁣4) Leisure reading ⁣

5) My cats ⁣Bailey and Erick. Both bring me a lot of love, laughter, and joy.

⁣6) Watching baseball (Toronto Blue Jays) has been a huge source of joy for me over the past 20 months.⁣ I was a huge Jays fan from the late 80s to early 2000s. These past two seasons are the most I’ve ever enjoyed watching/following baseball! Unfortunately the season just ended, but I’m SO excited for next season, and the many after!

⁣7) Having major boundaries on social media. I almost never go on social media after about 4-5pm, and I’ve mostly eliminated mindless browsing. ⁣Most of my time spent on social media is work-related, although I still spend more time on Twitter (mostly following news) than I’d like :).

⁣8) I have set firm boundaries with emails as they’d become overwhelming. I’m sure many can relate. I now only answer emails once a day on weekdays (unless it’s an emergency), and don’t email on the weekend. I have an ‘’email respond’’ folder and send my emails there so I know to address them. This has freed up a LOT of mental and physical energy, and has had a tremendous impact on improving my productivity for work, and the quality of my work. Most important of all, setting boundaries has dramatically reduced my stress. ⁣
